His Darling “Pumpkin”

She was his sweetheart all through their married life,

And her nick name was ‘Pumpkin’ his darling wife.

The children came---eight children/seven boys total---to the farming pair,
Love and many blessing sprinkled with the normal despair.

At 4:00 a.m. every morning their day began with morning kisses,
And to each  ‘Happy Day’ wishes.

She fixed breakfast as he milked and
fed the cows,
Then the older boys led the horses
out to the corrals.

While the younger boys cleaned the
stalls and laid fresh hay,
Beds for the horse’s nightly stay.

The only daughter helped her mama in the
house until they went to the fields,
Mama walked fast---with the baby girl right on her heels.

In the fall was pumpkins season, a good
living they made,
They were cut when ready and laid under the oaks in the shade.

Their Daddy kissed his Darling Pumpkin while
the kids giggled and stared,
The farmer and his pumpkin---their love was shared.

Every year the same crops were planted with celebrations
under the harvest moon,
The farm neighbors were invited to share their food
and danced long into the afternoon.

Now the children were grown and in the summer
grandchildren came to stay,
The farmer and his ‘Pumpkin’ were so happy
their life turned out this way.

In their late eighties they rocked on the porch and
laughed at the memories recalled,
Holding hands and kissing---he sang softly to his
sweetheart ‘Pumpkin’ she was enthralled.

50 years later under the Oak trees in the pumpkin field
---two tombstones stood facing the sun,
On her stone was written, My Darling Pumpkin---
always by my side---we are not done.

On the nights of the harvest moon---all believers say,
the farmer and his pumpkins danced the night away,
Written as a footnote---‘Our spirits are here to stay.’
